چکیده

Contrast between marker-assisted backcross (MABC) and doubled haploid (DH) methods in transferring genes for resistance to maize lethal necrosis (MLN) (Zea mays L.) is not well understood. The MLN caused by co-infection of plant chlorotic mottle virus sugarcane mosaic virus. Two panels consisting four BC3F2 six DH populations, separately developed through selection from crosses susceptible CIMMYT lines MLN-resistant donor parent (KS23-6), were used the current study. two populations different population structures with unequal sizes. Experiments conducted under artificial inoculations seasons 2018. Analyses variance revealed significant variations among genotypes both (p ≤ 0.001). Levene’s Welch’s tests found that variances means highly study identified reduced infections populations; however, lower severity area disease progress curve (AUDPC) values, higher heritability estimates obtained than populations. Additionally, showed relative genetic gains compared detected superiority over MABC breeding MLN. Nevertheless, results observed present warrant further investigations using same materials identical

Modeling Virus Coinfection to Inform Management of Maize Lethal Necrosis in Kenya.

Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) has emerged as a serious threat to food security in sub-Saharan Africa. MLN is caused by coinfection with two viruses, Maize chlorotic mottle virus and a potyvirus, often Sugarcane mosaic virus. To better understand the dynamics of MLN and to provide insight into disease management, we modeled the spread of the viruses causing MLN within and between growing seasons. ...

Unequal exchange and meiotic instability of disease-resistance genes in the Rp1 region of maize.

The Rp1 region of maize was originally characterized as a complex locus which conditions resistance to the fungus Puccinia sorghi, the causal organism in the common rust disease. Some alleles of Rp1 are meiotically unstable, but the mechanism of instability is not known. We have studied the role of recombination in meiotic instability in maize lines homozygous for either Rp1-J or Rp1-G. Test cr...

Selection of Dwarf Stature Yield Potential Lines from F3 Populations of White Maize (Zea mays L.)

'Dwarf stature' maize variety offers promises to withstand unfavorable growth environments of Kharif season. But, for developing such variety, dwarf stature inbred lines must be available. Here, twenty-four F3 populations of white maize were evaluated though assessment of their genetic variability, heritability, and character association for selection of dwarf stature promising lines based on y...
